The Race
Hot Pursuit 2010 is a 2400 km bike race from Vancouver to Winnipeg. At 7am on July 17, ultra-marathon cyclist Arvid Loewen will depart on his own for Winnipeg. 24 hours later Team CMU will set out in an attempt to catch him before he reaches Winnipeg. They will ride one at a time in relay fashion, racing around the clock in an attempt to make up ground. The first team to Winnipeg wins, earning their cause 60% of the prize money waiting at the finish line. The losing team’s cause will receive 40% of the prize money.
Team CMU is made up of professors Chris Huebner and John Brubacher, alumni Jon Guenter and Craig Penner, and Kevin Kilbrei. Can five regular guys on bicycles work together to overtake an ultra-endurance cycling legend? We will find out in July. The anticipated arrival at the Manitoba Legislative Building is the early evening of July 21.
While not technically competing against Team CMU (i.e., not in contention for the same pot of prize money), two other teams are also participating in Hot Pursuit 2010. A four person team representing the Winnipeg Police Service will head off 4 hours behind Team CMU. And a team of four grandmothers will leave from Calgary at about the same time Team CMU leaves from Vancouver.
